Un ragno dalla Calabria

Anche io lo visto fare da Argiope bruennichi come anche da Araneus sp. (angulatus?), ma sempre quando mi avvicinavo un po' troppo, o quando toccavo la tela (volontariamente o no)... Devo però amettere che non mi sono mai soffermato molto tempo ad osservare questi ragni, mai più di una decina di minuti... :rolleyes:

Ho anch'io qualcosa da dire sul movimento e sulle vibrazioni della tela di ragno di cui abbiamo parlato a lungo di recente. Ho portato una piccola colonia di Cyrthopora citricola in montagna e per ora i ragnetti si sono bene adattati all'altura (800mt s.l.m.) construendo decine di ragnatele su una siepe di Pitosforo. Approfittando del caldo di settembre, finora crescono bene e cacciano gli insetti alati che è un piacere da vedere. Il problema arriverà con l'inverno perchè questi ragni non credo abbiano un buon rapporto con la neve e il sottozero ... mah vedremo in quanti sopravviveranno. E' un tentativo di allevamento in semi-liberta. Lo so, mi direte ... con troppi rischi ... ma è l'unico sistema per poter continuare a studiare la specie (in natura) ora che sono finite le vacanze.

Ieri avevo notato una vespina verde metallizato con testa rossa che era rimasta impigliata nei tiranti superiori della ragnatela. Il ragno per farla cadere nella rete sottostante ha cominciato a far vibrare tutta la struttura in seta ... ma la preda rimaneva sospesa e non ne voleva sapere di cadere giù. In quella situazione di stallo, spesso il ragno decide di salire in alto e catturare lo stesso la preda anche se in un modo meno ortodosso rispetto ai suoi metodi classici.

Ma in questa occasione ho visto fare una operazione insolita alla giovane C.citricola, con una delle due zampe dell'ultimo paio ha agganciato un filo molto robusto e come si fa con una corda di chitarra ha cominciato a tenderlo facendo forza e aggrappandosi alla retina di fondo, si vedeva chiaramente che stava sforzandosi di tirare il più possibile. Si è spostata in tutto, di circa 7 centimetri dalla posizione originaria e poi ha mollato il filo che come una molla ha dato uno scossone unico violentissimo all'intero complesso-trappola e la vespina è caduta giù proprio come si voleva. E' stato un movimento così violento che mi sarei quasi aspettato di sentire suonata una nota. Sempre più affascinante queste citricole ... hanno anche rudimenti di tecnica da chitarrista a quanto pare ...CIAO

ho fatto anch'io lo stesso avvistamento sulla costa laziale (poco a nord di Sperlonga) e ho posto la stessa domanda in questo forum...

All'inizio di settembre, nella discussione su "Un ragno della Calabria" Tommy.73 aveva posto alcune domande circa l'oscillazione elastica della tela di Argiope da lui osservata al suo avvicinarsi, Avrei voluto rispondere allora sul significato di questo comportamento ma impegni accademici mi hanno costretto ad occuparmi di altri problemi. Anche se gran parte delle risposte l'hanno già date "migdan", "i-lang" e "matteus" credo utile trascrivere un brano tratto dal volume Spiders of the World di Rod & Ken Preston-Maphan (Bladford Press, 1984):

 

"It has already made clear that the most frequently used method of defence in orb web spiders is simply to hide away in a retreat constructed to one side of the web. If, however, it is disturbed when in the centre of its web, the orb web spider may react in a number of ways. Most frequently it makes a headlong dash for the security of the retreat but some spiders seldom seem to do this and, instead, let go of the web and fall to the ground on the end of their life-line, where they lie with their legs pulled in to their sides. As many of these spiders are mottled in greys and browns, they become virtually invisible amongst the detritus on the ground below the web. The third and most unusual method of defence involves the rapid vibration of the web as the spider sits at it centre. The oscillations are at such high frequency that the occupant of the web becomes a blur and, presumably, under these conditions, it would be nigh on impossible for a bird hovering in front of the spider to pick it off the web with its beak. The huge Nephila spiders also employ this tactic and this can be alarming even to a human being as the giant long-legged spider vibrates into a blur in the centre of its enormous yello web".

 

Aggiungo inoltre che:

 

"The incorporation into the web of a stabilimentum consisting of zig.zag bands of shining white silk is common within the Araneid genus Argiope. For many years, it was thought that its function was to strengthten the web [da cui il nome] or else to help conceal the spider, which often sits head downwards in the centre of the stabilimentum. Some neat experiments in the USA have established that their function is quite the reverse, for they actually advertise the presence of the web to birds, which frequently fly into webs lacking stabilimenta because these web are so difficult to see. The contruction of the web uses a considerable amount of the spider's protein supply and, if it is subsequently destroyed by a bird accidentally flying through it, then its constituent protein is lost to the spider, for spiders recycle protein by eating old or damaged web ..."

 

Chiedo venia per questo lungo messaggio ma pensavo utile fornire, anche se in ritardo, una spiegazione chiara del fenomeno
